Have you ever encountered a friend who constantly reminds you about everything? Someone who cares by encouraging you on gloomy days. A friend that will build you up whenever you feel downhearted. This good friend is what you should keep and value in your life forever. This character of God passed down to us on earth is very special to build up a relationship anchored to Jesus. In Colossians 1:15 and 16, the Son is the image of the invisible God (v.15). In Him, all things were created (v.16). His teachings significantly impact many, especially in fellowship with believers and by building up one another. His predominance is filled with humility, which is why it has the power to change someone’s life.
When you study the supremacy of Jesus, the Son of God, you will notice that the verses are the Bible’s summarization. You will learn how God planned the world from the Old Testament to New Testament, up to this generation. Ever since the world began, God’s heart for us has been to establish heaven on earth. If you will notice, Apostle Paul addressed powerful traits that the Lord wants to bless us with six characteristics of the Lord He’d love us to share with everyone.
“so that you may live a life worthy of the Lord and please him in every way: bearing fruit in every good work, growing in the knowledge of God, being strengthened with all power according to his glorious might so that you may have great endurance and patience, and giving joyful thanks to the Father, who has qualified you to share in the inheritance of his holy people in the kingdom of light.”
Colossians 1:10-12 NIV
1. WORTHY
As God’s elect, holy, and beloved children (Colossians 3:12), the Lord loves us to walk His ways. God is sacred and pure, and He’d love us to possess the same character as Him. No one is perfect, we are far from that, and we don’t deserve to be called perfect, but God called, His chosen and beloved children to walk rightfully, in truth, and with all joy.
2. FRUITFUL
When we do things honoring God, our actions produce kindness and goodness towards others. This character births in our spirit to live an abundant life pleasing to God.
When rooted kindness and goodness are shown to others, they will be passed on to someone else and then to another. Because of this, God will produce more fruits in every good work He has in store for you.
3. KNOWLEDGE
Paul is giving us the understanding of how to win God’s wisdom. It is impossible to receive God’s wisdom if we don’t know who God is and His purpose for us. Knowledge comes with understanding. Loving God and His word gives us a lot of ways to learn more about Him. When we prioritize our time for the Lord, knowledge about God increases too (Colossians 1:10b). If we are aware of God’s purpose for us, understanding His wisdom given to us is relatable.
4. STRENGTHENED
The teachings we learn from God and the Bible will increase our understanding and produce strength in all areas of our life, even physically. This strength is not given to us just by chance but free with the heavenly power of the Holy Spirit. In verse 11, it says, “strengthened with all might.” You know it is from the Lord when God won’t only give you the average strength but with complete understanding His power freely given to you with all might along with His word.
5. PATIENCE AND LONG-SUFFERING
When we notice the order of making a journey knowing God by increasing our knowledge of Him, we will see in verse 11 the effects when we walk with God. The word says it will give us strength with all our might because the word of God is our armor and shield when we grow in our faith in the Lord. Once we experience the strength of His power, we will develop patience and endurance. And because of our increasing knowledge of God; strength, we will know the very nature of God’s character and two of those are patience and long-suffering, to be obedient to the Lord without complaining. When we practice these lovely characteristics of God, it will bring us the fullness of joy (Colossians 1:11b). When we finally accept the true nature of God in His character; we will surpass all challenges in our life that requires patience and endurance when it is finally complete, it will bring you triumph and satisfaction.
6. JOYFULNESS
Knowing and loving God in truth, contentment, and suffering will give us rooted joy. This joy from God results from all the attributes we learned from Him. Character-building brings joy when the roots are from God’s heart. This rooted happiness is nowhere in any corner of this world. Eternal delight is like a peaceful adrenaline rush; it drifts slowly into the depths of our souls with excitement. That how amazing God is and His work!
When we own these traits from Jesus, whoever God brings into our life will be inspired in everything we do because God’s excellent work prompts us. God will make us His salt and light to many people to be a bridge into an everlasting relationship with Him. Never tire of encouraging people even if they lose interest in fellowship with you due to lack of time or business in life and other cause. Be a light in their darkest days, an umbrella on their rainy days, and a friend in Christ who builds up one another.
“You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.
Matthew 5:14-16 NIV
You are chosen.
